Jeff Speaks On The Coalition's New Arts Policy

Questions by Trevor Collette

Collette: So, Mr Kennett, why did you appoint your self the Minister for Arts?

Kennett: I am the most creative person in politics and that's why I am the
Arts Minister. In my younger days, my seduction strategy involved
exhibiting my etchings, and it worked. Those were the days. But now I am
just too busy. I get my pleasures in other ways, if you know what I mean.

Collette: Your new arts strategy is very generous isn't it?

Kennett: Well, between you and I, artists are fickle people. They will do
anything for a dollar.

Collette: But will you get a return for the dollar? How do you justify this
to your supporters?

Kennett: Culture is a central part of my strategy. And artists are very
good at creating culture. I thought you people from the media would have
understood this. You see, people who consider themselves to be rich and
powerful also consider themselves to be cultured. Culture is very
important. I want the Year 2000 to be the beginning of Victoria's cultural
revolution.

Collette: The new policy is putting a lot of funds in to art projects for
children and young people too.

Kennett: Yes. We must focus the energy of these young people - otherwise we
won't be able to control them. Look I have to go now.

Collette: Thank you Mr Premier.
