The Word for the Week
Hall of Fame
This page is dedicated to remembering those words and phrases
of times long past who saw so much use in their time as word for the week,
or were just so much fun to say, that they have become a regular part of
my vocabulary.
Sans: There are a few of these little other language words.
This one seeing it's intended usage...
Faux: Used to describe something that is trying to be something it
is not. eg. Soy milk is Faux milk. A certain Black fish that someone
tried to pass off as a shark when it's actually a carp gets referred to
as Faux shark (By me at least :).
Ersatz: Much like faux except that IMHO ersatz carries a certain
dodgy sound to it and hence anything labelled ersatz will have dodgy
qualities or be of a dubious nature...
Ellipsis: A special case, I don't so much say this as type it...
often... This little group of three full stops, used mainly in quoting
stuff you don't feel like quoting the entirity of (or feel like editing
to the verge of lying by omission:) has become a staple part of my typing
, I very rarely end a paragraph without one... see...
Pot, this is kettle, Black!: A fun little phrase gratutiously
stolen, er... liberated, um... borrowed, yes, borrowed from Ai Tran.
Mutually exclusive with my "You shouldn't be hypocritical like I am
because it's just wrong" which is a shame...
Are you going to be all right?,
wait for negative response,
Deal with it: One of two phrases in a similar vein that I aquired
from an old housemate. This needs to be seen to be fully apprieciated and
a lot of skill is required to get the right level of balance between
compassion in your voice and being patronizing. In this version the hand
is placed upon the shoulder in a somewhat reassuring manner and then
removed just before the second phrase is begun. See it in person, then
you'll realise what a prick I really am... :)
There, there, be comforted...: The second of the two.
This one requires that the hand pat the shoulder as the phrase is said
and is much more patronizing. On occasion the ridiculousness of the sheer
ineptitude with which you are trying (or not as the case may be) to
comfort the traumatised victim has brought a smile to their face, on
occasion.
You say that like it's a bad thing...: Said in a rather flippant
tone of voice, this was a brilliant WftW and lasted
almost three weeks, I never really got over this one because Pen kept
hitting me if I said it, after which the word for the week became "I'm
not going to say it..." (at least until I started getting hit for that
too...)
Manky: Another WftW that got me hit. This describes something
which is dodgy and carries with it an air of filthiness...
Additional note: Mostly as a result of getting Ken saying it, a
large proportion of the people I know now use this word at least
semi-regularly. And why not? It is after all a great word...
Double Murder-Suicide: Once upon a time a friend of mine was
interested in/involved with a woman who was in an 'open' relationship.
Not sure of the exact nature of this involvement we, of course as the
good friends we are, were ragging him about it. The day before hand on
the news was a story about a guy who shot his wife, her lover, and then
himself. Ever after using the phrase to give him crap about it the term
has been used to describe any such situation...
You suck! and not in a good way...: A phrase which sees a bit
of use by Ai Tran and myself. I'm not sure who initially came up with it
(if either of us) but it has become my phrase through the sheer virtue
of the fact that I use it a hell of a lot more than anyone else...
That's not what you said last night...: Used in much the same
manner as 'as the actress said to the bishop' although a little more
personal and self-effacing at the same time...
More to come...
