Download

You will need Winzip or another zip uncompressor to extract the files in the following archives.

You may download a Musical Agent by clicking on the link below. Also included in the zip file is the complete source code.

Musical Agent (Zip) ~ 480Kb

As part of my research in cellular automata, I wrote a simple application in Visual Basic that allows one to experiment with the 'Game of Life' automaton.

Game of Life (Zip) ~ 24Kb

Running the Agent

To run the Musical Agent, you must have Java 2 Version 1.3 already installed. After installing Java and uncompressing the zip file, go to the directory you uncompressed the files and type the following to run the agent.

java -jar MusicClient.jar

If you are using a Windows system and you installed Sun's JVM, you may be able to start the musical agent by double clicking on the MusicClient.jar file in Explorer. For detailed information on using the musical agent, refer to the manual.

Getting the Source

To obtain the source code for the Musical Agent, just uncompress the musical agent zip file. The source code can be found in the source directory. DOS batch files are provided that can be used to compile the source code. These batch files can be easily modified for other operating systems.

Recorded Algorithmic Music

The following recordings are MIDI files that were recorded using the Musical Agent's own recording functionality.

This is a stochastic recording generated by a stand-alone agent.
The recording of Paragraph 7 of the Great Learning was generated by 7 computers (all performers playing a piano).
Paragraph 7 again, but this time the performers are playing different instruments.
My own composition, Instrument Rush.
