Science / Law
After my completion of the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education),
two years of torture, with a final TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) of 97.55, though a little
bit disappointed because it was below my potential, I knew where my future studies lay
despite the many confrontations with parents and friends. The electives for VCE studies
were (1993-1994):
English (yr 11 + 12)
Chemistry (yr 11 + 12)
Physics (yr 11 + 12)
Mathematical Methods (yr 11 + 12)
Specialist Mathematics (yr 12)
Accounting (yr 11 + 12)
Economics (yr 11)
General Mathematics (yr 11)
My preferences for tertiary studies were like this:
Medicine
Science/Law
Dentistry
Physiotherapy
Commerce/Science
Arts/Science
etc.
Unfortunately, although my TER was high enough to get
into Medicine, my English results were just below the pre-requisite minimum of the
equivalent of 85%, therefore disqualifying myself as a candidate for Medicine :-(. But there
was hope for Science/Law
which I graciously met the cut. So despite the disappointments of the previous year I
approached 1995 with a new confidence and a new challenge.
Below are the disciplines which either I have done or plan to do,
an outline of my intentions/course:
Year 1 (normal BSc./LLB disciplines, i.e. 3:1)
Legal Process 100 (LAW1100)
Chemistry (CHM1011/1022)
Biology (BIO1011/1022)
Physics (PHS1011/1022)
Year 2 (deviation from BSc./LLB disciplines, i.e. 3:1 & not 2:2)
Contract 200 (LAW2100)
Biochemistry (BCH2011/2022)
Physiology (PHY2011/2022)
Chemistry Biological (CHM2151)
Year 3 (deviation from 1:2 to 2:0, defer LLB to complete BSc. with 2 majors)
Biochemistry (BCH3011/3022)
Pharmacology (PHA3011/3022)
Biochemistry (BCH4000)
Year 5 (continuation of LLB degree & p/t work using BSc. degree)
Torts 200 (LAW2200)
Property 300 (LAW3400)
Criminal Law & Procedures (LAW3300)
Year 6
Administrative Law 300 (LAW3100)
Constitutional Law 300 (LAW3200)
Moot Court 500 (LAW5500)
+ optional law subjects totalling 75 value units
Year 7 (completion of LLB degree with no hope of honours)
Optional law subjects totalling 135 value units
Year 8 - Legal Practice (for total completion of LLB degree)
MSc. or PhD (for BSc. degree while hopefully working as a lawyer)
By now I should be a qualified lawyer but
in which direction should I pursue?!. Family Law, Patent Law, or Soliciting, etc.
With my science majors in Biochemistry and to a lesser extent Pharmacology I can find jobs
almost anywhere. Anything involving the chemical and
physical structures of biological molecules; cell growth and defferentiation;
reproduction and development in plants and animals; industrial and agricultural
applications, including antibody production, and pesticle development; and
computer applications in modelling complex biological processes and the determination
of molecular structures. Career opportunities ranging from pharmaceutical and chemical
industries; food industries; university and CSIRO research laboratories; life
science teaching at secondary schools; agriculture, horticulture and viticulture;
biotechnology industries; private industry, in research and development, hospital
and diagnostic research laboratories; blood bank and serum laboratories; various
national and state government departments (eg. forensic science, agriculture,
health, patents); international aid organisations. Since the biochemical and
biotechnological fields are so rapidly developing, more career opportunities
can be expected here than in many other areas of science. And even better,
since postgraduate qualifications from Monash University are recognised all
over the world, my choices become virtually unlimited. As regard to the Law
degree jobs are plentiful in administration, etc. since the law is certainly
around every corner of life!
