Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that has a history spanning over 2000 years. Today it is a modern Olympic sport and is the only Eastern martial art to be honoured in such a competitive arena as an Olympic Medal Sport.
Taekwondo is combat sport using bare hands and feet to defeat an opponent or even several opponents. It incorporates several powerful striking and kicking techniques in order to achieve maximum damage with minimal effort. Taekwondo also teaches numerous self-defence techniques for use in situations where hand strikes and kicks are not available. However self-defence is not the only focus of this martial art; Taekwondo also helps improve the physical fitness, general well-being and poise of those who practice it. The benefits of Taekwondo reach far beyond the physical, it also enables practitioners to develop self-esteem and confidence. Taekwondo also encourages modesty and generosity; virtues which are achieved through intense training of both the mind and the body. |
