In a fairly out of the way place, a startling discovery was made, indicating the 'benefits' of this move. Follow this link for the full transcript of the discovery!!!

Highlights: Construction and refurbishment of areas in northern end of Bldg 37 will "provide a contiguous and modern environment for consolidation" of post-grads.

What?

Tenders on Construction Phase Closed
The date for closed of tenders to be received has passed, and we eagerly await any news, apart from the sad news that the no-frills/budget offer from Anthony Buchanan was not accepted. Click here for the full Stelios transcrip (opens new window).

On the 21st of February, Former Presidents Fouras and Dusting went to inspect for themselves the new construction, and the unanimous verdict was that the common rooms are an "absolute disgrace".

Here are the pictures of their Expedition. Check out the plans, look at the pictures, and decide for yourself how good you think the common rooms will be, and send a MEGA-TALK to discuss!

Photos at 12th April.

Southern Room. Yes, that's carpet on the floor.

A look through the top door at the Northern Room.

Windows over the workshop have been frosted over!

Some of the desks in the Northern room, with Webmaster's spot allocated! ;)

More desks - This person does NOT have this desk.

Sorry for bad res. Common room. Green arrow marks original floor width.

"View" out of Northern windows

That's close to a 6m drop!

Find the spelling error, and let him know on x53959

The post-doc letter boxes, now the right way up!

The "Gap" is still there, between post-grad meeting rooms!

As are the tubes of air. Green is the next photo view!

Down that tube of air! Fascinating!!

Our Pidgeon-holes. Now's the time to mix'n'match keys'n'locked-boxes!!!

Photos at 5th April.

The Southern Post-Grad Room. Painted, and lights hanging.

They've managed to align the holes from both sides!

Partially extended floor, and some wall thing in OUR COMMON ROOM!

Chairs in the Post-Doc meeting rooms.

Post-Doc chairs (at least) will have corporate badging.

We've been promised all mailboxes will be locked and keys placed in different lockers before anyone notices - should be fun!

Security swipe for the post-docs room- Unless of course you have an FO.111 key...

Sneak peak at the Northen room. Is that carpet? (Apologies for poor quality - workers were still on site this time...)

Workstation And Joinery Detail (note the lack of stationary-drawer!>

First Meeting Room for Post-Grads, but...

...note the Air Duct IN THE DOOR-WAY of the second room - Genious! Editor's Note: Plans above show this will be removed.

Former President Dusting expresses his disgust at the size of the common room! That rail he's holding surrounds the "Void". See the maps above to compare to this image.

Former President Dusting is overcome by the Post-Docs' Room. Former President Fouras realising that the Post-Docs are being looked after more than the Post-Grads.

View from far NW Corner of Post-Docs' Room. That brown curved wall is their common room.

View on Western wall of Post-Grad room. "It might not be the nicest, but at least it's something to look at." says Former President Fouras

Competition Question: Looking at the plans, Where will these Bats Go? Email the WEBMASTER with your answer to enter!

Pictures from 3 Feb 2005

Sign signalling where the work is being done.

Above the sign, the old applied mech lab.

...and the other wall. Through the door at the end of the former lab, and to what looks like Stelios' new office.

But wait, what is this mysterious box?

Trolley this side (?) indeed!

More pictures to follow, as construction progresses faster than expected...!

The cube-farm which we will be occupying has a display set up in the Undergrad-4th-year-Common room. Here's a picture:

Located in the Final-Years' Room is a sample of the desks we will be getting. Don't worry, the cabinet wont have that stationary drawer: it is fully expected that you will file your pencils under 'Y' for Yougottabekidding. Also,(rather generously, I thought) you will no longer have to deal with the extra comfort of filling cabinets.
Toilet roll on desk is shown for scale purposes. Note the expected (estimated to be 12") size of monitor in detail drawing. Final Year Room is in Bldg 31/154.

Here is the last plan that was released for tendering. Pro's include the removal of all door-facing desks. Con's include everything else, although it is worth noting the earnest attempt at "Virtual Walls" where it will 'virtually' seem like you're working in peace and quiet.

The dogginess is because Stelios sent it to us as a .doc file, and there was some pizzazz lost in translation.

In a letter from Stelios to all students:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following rooms will be made available for the postgraduate students
who are currently located in the area which is earmarked for
redevelopment, (i.e. rooms 135-145 Bldg 37).

SPME Space

Room    Accommodates
161         3
164         3
166         3
168D        2
168E        2

Before students can move in we need to transfer or activate if required
the data lines/points across to the Mech Eng Subnet and to activate the
voice lines. The door locks also need to be changed to the Mech key
system.

SPME will be making rooms 161 & 168e immediately available to us once
they remove some furniture and the other rooms will follow once the
current occupants have been told and relocated. This will occur in the
next couple of weeks.

The latest estimate from the Project Managers is for us to vacate the
northern   first floor area of building 37 by end of October 2004.

I will let you know as to when to move into these rooms as there isn't
any point in moving in before the data and phones are transferred across
to Mech Eng. The request for that to be done will go into the system
today, it normally takes 5-7 days to do.

I will keep the students involved updated.

Regards

Stelios.

Planning for the relocation from Caulfield Campus

Proposed Changes at Clayton

Proposed building works Proposed Location Currently Benefit
Construct and refurbish areas in the northern end of b37 for RTS and post docs B37, level 1, Northern end Space currently configured as labs & small offices for admin staff and some RT students within the School of Mechanical Engineering. Poor quality space with poor utilisation. Requires Mechanical to acquire a SPME storage area. Consolidate robotics to mezzanine floor above g21a by moving g23 and 130. Relocation of Mech electronics workshops (134&6) to ground floor g23 after relocation robotics. IRT instrumentation room (132) to (g24&5) Mechanical admin to be relocated (126&8) to b 31. Mechanical Vis Lab (129) after negotiation with E&CE to B31 106B. Archive room (125) to temporary location pending move to refurbished b31 ground floor. Will provide a contiguous and modern environment for the consolidation of Research Training student accommodation and Post Docs within Mechanical Engineering(sic) housed in the laboratory area. (Allows g23a, 158 and 158a to be vacated) Consolidates Robotics into a single facility. Co-locates Mechanical admin staff. IRT located closer to laboratories. Vis Lab moved to higher profile teaching location with potential for cross faculty usage.
