Coming up:

Have you all done as much work as you had hoped? Scholarship running ou tof time? You only have now one week to quickly get done what you were meant to, before you spend the New-Year’s celebrations alone and thinking "what have I been doing all year???"
And make sure you get a Blue permit before all those undergrad shits do.
Don’t say you wasn’t warned.

Air Con Solution!

Silly little box is permanantly set at 23 degrees. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were true!
Stage ONE of the solution to our Air-Con problem has arrived (no news on whether there are any other stages...), in the form of a LOCKED PLASTIC BOX housing the controls.

Yes, it appears as though all those years contracting air-conditioning has paid off in the quick and simple solution to our climate control problems! Here's a transcript of a possible conversation:
Stelios: Air con don't work
Dumbarsecontractor: This is the second place we’ve ever built. The system is perfect. Must be the students.
Students: Dumb-arse contractor.

We also remind Stelios that the solution is actually visible from his office window: Move the baffles 1m away from the fan to remove the blade-pass frequency!!!
Post Script: It has also been alledged, that the Wall Of Protest was attacked by one of these dumbarse contractors, and that Karlis put him in his place.

(24/11/05) Identified!

The black-faced cuckoo shrike
This is the bird that has been spotting iteself in the windows of the northern (ne South Central) end of the post-grad cube farm. It is a black-faced cuckoo shrike, and has been identified by none-other than our closest bird-spotter and clib treasurer Naomi.
Apparantly it is wide-spread and common throughout Australia, and has "curious habit of shuffling their wings upon landing" although there seems to be no mention of flying into windows. I once had a pidgeon kill itself on our balcony windows when it flew straight into the mirrored laminate.

(19/9/05) A New Soccer Champion

It was the last game, and we got lumped with the new ref, and subsequently the ‘tackle from behind’ rule seemed to have been amended. Don’t believe us? Hyeok got a yellow card! Of all people!
Find out who won the Golden Boot award and read David’s spectacular review here in Movie form (a moving GIF)

Mr Krishnapillai, BSc is a Director of The Service Providers Association Inc (SPAN).

Tutoring 2005

Seems we’re getting screwed on preparation time again. I recommend noone do any more preparation once their 10hrs allocation is exhausted (max:week 10). He’s done it again, our Dominik!
To recall a message from Tutoring Head Owen Gould, MEGA Vice-President:
The department is now co-ordinating the allocations of tutors and demonstrators themselves this year. Not much will be changed except that forms need to be returned to Helen Frost or Terry Bereen instead of me. The main reason for this change is to monitor hours taken on by tutors.
Forms can be downloaded from the top of this website, and by select the tutoring link "here". Any further enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact either Helen or myself.
Owen Gould Vice-President.

Feature

Martin Goose

Well, it seems that only Martin was able to predict a 2-1 ashes victory to England, and for that he is gloating. And for that everyone is jealous, and are not enjoying having to read his emails expressing his joy.
Word has it, though, that he is enjoying life in France (even IF they hate the english and catholics).

Pope Leo’s name (AD440-461) of 3 letters became the shortest since Pope Pius (AD140-AD155) took the record off Linus(AD67-76).

Nerds!

My fellow Sea Beavers, seems we’re not the only MEGA in the world. Check out these guys here, and then tell me you don’t want to be a part of our fine organisation!
And then tell me how much better OUR website is than all of these nerds’!!!!!!

Wallpaper!

With the new office layout, most of us have found that there is now no possibility of viewing our monitors without someone looking over our shoulder. But for those lucky few that can, this wallpaper will keep you in line. Maybe not in the same big-brother way, but in the more pro-active, and grown-up manner, namely, the You're-old-enough-to-look-after-your-own-research-time stance.
Happy wallpapering!

Automatically Generate Journal Papers!

Catholicism is a beautiful thing.
After reading a report on ABC news, I was able to get approval from some people at MIT to put a link to their website, which automatically generates a Journal Paper for you, including references and figures. It is currently in a form that creates Software-Electronics papers, but wouldn't it be great to apply it to your own!
http://pdos.lcs.mit.edu/scigen
It's written in Perl, so if you''re going to download the software, let me know if you know how to get it working on your personal computer. You can also donate to their cause - current tally $2401.43, up from $2396.88 after a $4.55 donation.

Canberra Conference Snaps

Over some of the more delightful weeks of Melbourne's summer, four of our colleagues decided to put academic knowledge ahead of good weather, and went to Canberra to learn. Here is their adventure, told in picture form.

mega @ monash | ~/eng/mech >> $ whatis mega _

MEGA was formed to organise social events for post-graduate mechanical engineers (and their BETter halves) such as beer nights, pub nights, bbq’s and other strenuous activities (Movie nights, and daytime activities). Please be aware, that MEGA also ensures that where you see the word "beer", you can feel free to substitute with "soft-drinks", or "water;", or if you’re a pseudo-upper-class MCC member, "wine". MEGA even tries to cater for the individual eating habits of Aran. And we don’t even LIKE bubble‘n’squeek.
On the day to day side, MEGA also provides a forum for post graduate mechies to discuss and raise concerns and issues relating to post-graduate life with each other, and provide an official channel/body/representative to speak to the department .

******* Please feel free to actively participate in adding material to this site that you think would be worth while for MEGA members to know about, such as reviews of events, and important seminars etc. This disk space is far from full!**********

What’s New?

(14/12/05) Deparmental Lunceon

Karlis’ 95 Shiraz It was a famous victory for the post-grads, after having to put up with a lot of rubbish, with post-grads snapping up 4 out of the 16 bottles of wine from the department’s cellars (read here "Under Sheridan’s desk")
Then the coup came when 3 extra bottles were donated to MEGA, mostly out of pitty for our plight: We thank you for that, Stelios, and remind you about the solution to the air-con problem(read about it in "News").
Shiraz Karmali received the award for Excellence in 1995
Well done to Karlis, Min, Tai and Alan.
Post Script: Karlis thanks Michelle for drawing his B22 in the first go.

(8/12/05) BBQ Snaps!

Final esky shot for 2005
The last bbq event for the year before the major break was had on Friday 8th december, and there were some very hot sausages, and Karlis and Jonno managed to finally rid MEGA of the scurge that is Budweiser. Check out all the pics here

Competition! - Spot the lump

In the last photo of the lastest bbq series, Hyeok Lee has a ping at one stump with the leftover ice. Can you spot the ice-ball in flight?
Be the first to correctly identify the ice ball and be an uber-nerd!

Hyeok throws the ice...
or does he?

(6/09/05) Last t-shirt sold!

Not a MEGA member.
MEGA has finally sold out of its first purchase of liquidable assets, with the last MEGA t-shirt being sold on this day. A risky proposition at the time, the committee knew that the t-shirts would be eventually sold, even if it took a few years - which it did. Good quality, good design, and made entirely in Australia by Bluegum (though not sure about the paint).
Don’t panic, Justin, this doesn’t mean we can’t still have the Mormon chick picture on the website. Remember who the webmaster is.

(31/08/05) First Wednesday BBQ

At last the pictures of the latest BBQ are available, and wasn't that a rather event-filled one for this committee’s first go at running a bbq. Highlights included the halal meat, and Justin's cry of "What’s going on? Where’s the food?" at ten past one, as ex-presidents ar apt to do.

Halal meat on offer at the first bbq for the new committee! Nicely cooked, Gaurav!

(16/08/05) Milk Trip

Webmaster and Martin.
With Martin leaving for the cheese, champas&chicks of France today, he made one last memorable trip to the fridge for some milk, and the Webmaster was there to capture every moment! Go here for the full pictorial story!

(//05)New Committee

Today marks a historic day in the life of MEGA, when for the first time we have 3 females on the committee, and we have representations from nearly every research group in the department! The day was marked with a full house attendence, with many, many pizzas, (and the obligatory 3 meat lover’s for every vegetarian), followed by some interesting voting, and nominations. Of note, is the departure of Andy Chan as club treasurer for the last 18months, and of Justin Timberlake Leontini as club president (For full listing of committee, go here). Congratulations to all involved, and I don’t know how Karlis got lumped with minuting, while Martin (outgoing secretary) was sitting in the room...grrrrr....
Pope Lando reigned from August 913AD - March 914AD. He remains the only Pope in history to be named Lando.

(28/7/05) BBQ

The first bbq of semester 2 showed the way this event is starting to grow! Raj got in early, but there were still plenty of snags right up to when Anya finally arrived! Those mexican were a bit much for some (softies), but generally the choice was bro, and the beer did flo-wed!
Kevin[1], these things are great!

(21/7/05) Classy Bowling Night

Was this the best MEGA event ever? Check out these photos to make up your own mind!
A nail-biting finish is in store.

(1/4/05) MEGA AGM

Aran and Karlis retired this year after two full years of service.
On the 1st of April, MEGA members gathered to elect the new committee and raise discussion about issues concerning the membership. Election was fair, with active participation in voting and eating. Full transcript of MEGA AGM minutes will be available as soon as completed from this website. For full details on the new committee, visit here, or keep reading!
This AGM saw the departure of two stallworts of the MEGA committee: Aran Fitzgerald retired after 2 years as Induction officer, and Karlis Atvars retired from the highly influencial and public position of Secretary. But we also witnessed the continuation of the dominence of fluids in MEGA with the arrival of two new committee members: Patrick Browne as the new Social Secretary, and Bronwyn Stewart as Induction Officer. We wish both these new members well in their roles, and hope for less newbies being confused and bewildered by the induction process, and for a uniquly kiwi flavour in partying!

(11/2/05) Welcome Back BBQ

’Welcome back, welcome back, welcome ba-ack’. The immortal word of the show that typecast Travolta in the only role he’s fit to play, Danny Zuko. Snags were a plenty, bread even more, and it was wonderful to get some of that amber ale flowing through the gullet again in a work environment. Highlights included:
- Charing the snags BEFORE the one-oh-clock start time
- Better thicknesses on the egg-plant
- Karlis getting through 4 beers, the last one at his desk
- Aran joining him
- The interesting mix-up which led to some people believing we were a free-grog-shop!
It was a long time coming, and we’ll be sure not to let ya’ll go so long without one again!
