David's story

I became a Christian when I came to study at Monash University. A couple of Christians from Navigators (Nav) shared their faith with me and invited me to look into the Bible with them. In that 12 months, they introduced Jesus to me and I slowly developed a relationship with God and took a step to become a Christian in August of 1989. Last year was my 10th year with the Nav and I have since left the Nav and integrated with my local church to continue my walk with the Lord there and to serve there.

It is really difficult to summarise what I experienced in that ten years. I have experienced healing in many areas. I had a very deep emotional scar because of a bad experience with friends when I was small. It was one that I covered up for many years because of shame. I eventually overcame it with the love of God and a Christian guy around me. I have had really bad relationship with my father for many years also. However, God made it completely clear to me that it is right to honor my parents. Last year, I finally reconciled with my father. This is so great and I thank God so much for this because I really would regret if either my father or I leave this world without reconciling with each other.

I have experienced many other blessings too. I led a number of people to know Jesus and some of them are still very much in love with Him and serving Him, not only in Australia but overseas. Seeing someone finding real joy and satisfaction in life (which can only be found in God) gives me such a great joy also. God taught me many lessons. He made me into the person that I am now. He taught me how to be responsible; how to trust Him; how to love and forgive; how to give and be content; how to comfort and encourage; how to open my lives up to others; how to be a man of substance and integrity; how to accept help and love and rebuke from others. All these I am still learning and I thank God that not all these lessons are learnt inside classrooms but I learnt them through answered prayers, through the hard times that God allowed me to go through and helped me to get through. I have also learnt some of these lessons as God picked me up when I fail.

Amongst my peers in Nav, there were some who love God so deeply that they would give their lives and dreams to God. That inspired me so much and challenged me to give my life to God, too. We would be eating together, playing together, studying together, and encouraging each other. We learned great things together, supporting and helping each other. We prayed for each other and listened to one another. There were heaps of fun and many lasting friendships were developed which I will always remember fondly and I hope to continue to build on these friendships. All these made my university life a very special one especially as they shaped me and also my goals enormously.
