Sarawak
General Information
There are only 2 states in East Malaysia which
are Sabah and Sarawak. Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia.
Geographical Location
Sarawak is situated on the Northwest coast of Borneo. It has the world's oldest rainforest, mighty serpentine rivers, jungle filled mountains and the largest cave chambers and passages known to mankind. Together, these form one of the world's most complex and diverse ecosystems, but one that is very visitor-friendly. There are also some rarest and most exotic animal and plant species in Sarawak's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
Sarawak's rivers, mountains, caves and jungles also allows visitors to have enjoy many nature based recreational activities. These include longhouse tours and nature walks. Adventure caving, white water rafting, mountain biking on jungle trails are other possible activities.
The Sarawak experience is about adapting to the local surroundings and enjoying the challenges of the environment. Camping out in the middle of the jungle or bedding down on the verandah of an upriver longhouse can leave memories and impressions that last a lifetime.
This mixture of tradition and modernity extends to Sarawak's towns and cities. In Kuching, the state capital, modern office blocks stand side-by-side with the perfectly preserved colonial-style buildings of the Brooke era. Luxury hotels and condominiums share the banks of the Sarawak River with whole villages of traditional Malay wooden houses built on stilts.
It is this combination of the old and the new, the city and the rainforest, the local and the cosmopolitan, that makes Sarawak such a unique and fascinating travel destination, and a place that can genuinely surprise and delight even the most experienced traveller.
