Our main aims are:
ii) To increase interaction between overseas and local students through social activities, working with and alongside Monash University Medical Undergraduates' Society (MUMUS).
The relationships we establish now are important as medicine involves much communication between doctors here in Australia and internationally. OMSA's name was changed to IMSA to emphasise this broader outlook.
Some students have been concerned that IMSA may inadvertently promote segregation between local and overseas students. There has been a tendency for this to occur in the past, as many seek a comfortable niche where there will be minimal changes in lifesty le, culture and friendships.
Others will apply themselves to their studies, acknowledging the respsonsibility of studyng abroad, in an alien environment, whilst being a financial burden on their family, since studying medicine is not inexpensive.
Although IMSA will encourage increased interaction among students, it is up to individual students to cross the cultural barrier, and seek unity among ourselves. Not only will we benefit by broadening our knowledge of different societies (a great help in understanding and empathising with patients of different backgrounds), but we will also be able to uphold and support each other in the years ahead in situations where we must work together in Medicine.
