Foreword
The ECSS is one of the largest
and most prominent student societies on the Clayton campus. Annually
the ECSS boasts over a thousand members. With 25 per cent of Monash
Commerce students holding a membership there is an enourmous potentional
for growth.
|
 |
To maximise student involvement the ECSS
unanimously decided to restructure its operations in 1998. This was the first
step towards firmly entrenching the ECSS as Victoria’s premier commerce student
society. The society is formally divided into its two key service areas; social
activities and professional development.
Within the ECSSsocial and ECSSprofessional
divisions, teams are allocated to project areas. By dividing the society into
these two key divisions, we can create focused teams in each area enabling
us to provide improved services to our members. The society’s new structure
provides a clear message to members and sponsors of our purpose and services.
The decentralization of decision making provided by the new structure is aimed
to inject enthusiasm and energy into the committee.
To become the largest and most prominent
student society in Victoria we aim to maximize the provision of services to
members. This will be achieved now that we have the most conducive, project
orientated committee structure in place. Daniel Pelosi President

Mentor Program:
The Mentor Program is
essential for first year students and assists them in making the transition
from their last year of secondary school to their first year in the new
environment of university. Small groups of first years meet with their
later year Mentor, who introduces them to the perks and quirks of life
at Monash and provides information ranging from study tips to where the
best university cafes are.
Many students experience some problems in making
the transition from their last year of school to their first year in the
new environment of the university. People sometimes feel lost in a large
institution where they may not known many other students, Adjusting to
different teaching and assessment styles is usually difficult and the
mentor scheme tries to help students find ways of overcomming these initial
difficulties. The mentor will be there to assist in finding out who to
go to for help, the 'short cuts' and the best ways of finding information.
Students will be assisted in making the transition from school to university,
benefiting from the experience of later year students to help with issues
such as approaches to study, study strategies and building social networks
and generally making the most of the opportunities available at Monash
University. There is no need to learn the hard way!
The Faculty of Business and Economics, in conjuction
with the Economics and Commerce Students' Society, is offering a student
mentoring program at the Clayton campus. Groups of 10 first-year students
will meet with two mentors, who will be thord-year Faculty students, for
5 one-hourly sessions during 'O WEEK' and first semester. First-year students
enrolled in courses in the faculty are invitied to participate in this
program.
On enrolment day, the Economics and Commerce Students' Society will have
a table set up at the enrolment venue should you wish to talk to representatatives
from the ECSS and register for the mentor scheme. Students interested
in participating should contact the ECSS.

Securities Competition
The sharemarket game is the most anticipated and
prestigious simulated trading game at tertiary levels in Victoria. For
the past four years (since the establishment ECSS), this competition has
provided trading-oriented Monash students with a rare opportunity to expose
themselves to the subtleties and complexities of market trading. The sharemarket
game will again operate in 1999 bigger and better than ever. Interest
again promises to be high and ECSSprofessoional is looking forward to
a successful competition.

the Economics Competition focuses on the Macroeconomic management ability
of participants. Each entrant offers options for selected economic variables
which are then fed into a model of the economy. Simulation occurs and
students receive feedback and proceed to enter the next periods’ values
for these variables. The aim of the competition is to meet certain policy
targets as determined by the adjudicators. ECSSprofessoional is looking
forward to the successful debut of this competition and in the longer

in 1999. In deference to previous years, the event will be held near the
end of March in order to preceed the start of the general graduate application
process. Employers and students have the chance to come together in a
non business environment to discuss all manner of topics concerning employment
experience. In keeping with previous years, a guest speaker will address
the attendants. This event has enjoyed success in past years with ECSSprofessoional
working to continue the success of this night into the future.

PLANT/OFFICE TOUR
new initiative for 1999 ECSSprofessoional is keen to develop a plant
or office tour program in 1999. This will provide students with the opportunity
to visit and learn more about prospective employers. ECSSprofessoional
believes that the opportunity to allow a group of students to visit prospective
employers informally will provide an invaluable insight to the culture
of the firm. With this knowledge students will have a greater capacity
to make ‘informed’ decisions about employment.
