Foreword

The ECSS is one of the largest and most prominent student societies on the Clayton campus. Annually the ECSS boasts over a thousand members. With 25 per cent of Monash Commerce students holding a membership there is an enourmous potentional for growth.

To maximise student involvement the ECSS unanimously decided to restructure its operations in 1998. This was the first step towards firmly entrenching the ECSS as Victoria’s premier commerce student society. The society is formally divided into its two key service areas; social activities and professional development.

Within the ECSSsocial and ECSSprofessional divisions, teams are allocated to project areas. By dividing the society into these two key divisions, we can create focused teams in each area enabling us to provide improved services to our members. The society’s new structure provides a clear message to members and sponsors of our purpose and services. The decentralization of decision making provided by the new structure is aimed to inject enthusiasm and energy into the committee.

To become the largest and most prominent student society in Victoria we aim to maximize the provision of services to members. This will be achieved now that we have the most conducive, project orientated committee structure in place. Daniel Pelosi President

Mentor Program:

The Mentor Program is essential for first year students and assists them in making the transition from their last year of secondary school to their first year in the new environment of university. Small groups of first years meet with their later year Mentor, who introduces them to the perks and quirks of life at Monash and provides information ranging from study tips to where the best university cafes are.

Many students experience some problems in making the transition from their last year of school to their first year in the new environment of the university. People sometimes feel lost in a large institution where they may not known many other students, Adjusting to different teaching and assessment styles is usually difficult and the mentor scheme tries to help students find ways of overcomming these initial difficulties. The mentor will be there to assist in finding out who to go to for help, the 'short cuts' and the best ways of finding information. Students will be assisted in making the transition from school to university, benefiting from the experience of later year students to help with issues such as approaches to study, study strategies and building social networks and generally making the most of the opportunities available at Monash University. There is no need to learn the hard way!

The Faculty of Business and Economics, in conjuction with the Economics and Commerce Students' Society, is offering a student mentoring program at the Clayton campus. Groups of 10 first-year students will meet with two mentors, who will be thord-year Faculty students, for 5 one-hourly sessions during 'O WEEK' and first semester. First-year students enrolled in courses in the faculty are invitied to participate in this program.

On enrolment day, the Economics and Commerce Students' Society will have a table set up at the enrolment venue should you wish to talk to representatatives from the ECSS and register for the mentor scheme. Students interested in participating should contact the ECSS.

Exam Revision Seminar Series: New initiative for 1999

The Exam Revision Seminar Series will enable members to gain an insight to exam technique and reviews of core subjects from a student’s perspective. Tutors will be selected from honours and postgraduate students, and will liaise with relevant academic staff to ensure the highest possible quality of service is provided.

Exam solution database:

New initiative for 1999 Recognizing the demand for such a service, the Exam Solution Database aims to provide members with sample solutions to past papers. It is intended that the Exam Revision Seminar Series and Exam Solution Database will compliment one another, providing members with examples of both exam approach and solutions respectively.

Securities Competition

The sharemarket game is the most anticipated and prestigious simulated trading game at tertiary levels in Victoria. For the past four years (since the establishment ECSS), this competition has provided trading-oriented Monash students with a rare opportunity to expose themselves to the subtleties and complexities of market trading. The sharemarket game will again operate in 1999 bigger and better than ever. Interest again promises to be high and ECSSprofessoional is looking forward to a successful competition.

Management Consulting Competition

ECSSprofessoional will again host the state final of the Andersen Consulting Management Competition in 1999. Fielding teams from most major Victorian universities, the competition provides a competitive and high standard of applied problem solving in a corporate change management environment. Reputation of the competition is improving and is increasingly seen as an important experience for students studying within the Faculty.

Economics Competition

New to the portfolio of ECSS events this year, the Economics Competition focuses on the Macroeconomic management ability of participants. Each entrant offers options for selected economic variables which are then fed into a model of the economy. Simulation occurs and students receive feedback and proceed to enter the next periods’ values for these variables. The aim of the competition is to meet certain policy targets as determined by the adjudicators. ECSSprofessoional is looking forward to the successful debut of this competition and in the longer term, the development of the competition as a leading interact

Corporate Cocktails

ECSSprofessoional will again stage the highly regarded Corporate Cocktails in 1999. In deference to previous years, the event will be held near the end of March in order to preceed the start of the general graduate application process. Employers and students have the chance to come together in a non business environment to discuss all manner of topics concerning employment experience. In keeping with previous years, a guest speaker will address the attendants. This event has enjoyed success in past years with ECSSprofessoional working to continue the success of this night into the future.

PLANT/OFFICE TOUR

new initiative for 1999 ECSSprofessoional is keen to develop a plant or office tour program in 1999. This will provide students with the opportunity to visit and learn more about prospective employers. ECSSprofessoional believes that the opportunity to allow a group of students to visit prospective employers informally will provide an invaluable insight to the culture of the firm. With this knowledge students will have a greater capacity to make ‘informed’ decisions about employment.

MOCK INTERVIEW PROGRAM

new initiative for 1999 To aid the professional development of our members ECSSprofessoional will conduct a mock interview program.

CAREERS FAIR

The careers fair is held annually on campus in conjunction with monseacs. Employers are invited to attend and provide information about their firm. This event is held early in the year therefore being extremely beneficial to those poised to enter the interview process.

Counter Faculty Handbook

Subject reviews written for students by students, the Counter Faculty Handbook provides essential information to members regarding all subjects offered at Monash, as well as an explanation of professional accreditation requirements. Published on the web to make it more accessible and environmentally friendly, it is anticipated that this will be the site for members to visit when reviewing their course.

ECSS Files

Our primary publication, ECSS Files is issued once a term and is the most important source of contact with members. Included are details of upcoming events and functions, results of competitions, as well as reviews and feedback from members. The first edition will include an orientation guide, which is intended to provide prospective members with information regarding O-week, the university and our student society. This publication will list in detail all our activities and services.

Careers Guide

This vital and exhaustive publication is a collation of potential employers in different fields of interest including Accounting, Investment, Law, Management Consultants, Stockbroking and Industry. Our principal aim is to provide the primary guide for students seeking employment and work experience. Thr guide will include information such as interview skills and tips; a resume writing guide; application details for vacation employment and graduate employment; and detailed employer information. The end result will be a thorough guide that is widely distributed and recognised as an essential tool for anyone interested in seeking employment.
