The GAUNIX Security group FAQ
If your Yoyo account has been suspended, you will see a suspension message similar to this one, when you attempt to log in to your Yoyo account:
Your account was disabled on Wed 01/01/97 at 00:00 by
Security Person <security@yoyo.cc.monash.edu.au>. The reason for this was:
... explanation
If you see a suspension message, you should:
- Read the WHOLE suspension message carefully.
Make sure that you understand the reason why your Yoyo account has been suspended.
- Contact the person who suspended your account.
It is in your own interest to do this as soon as you can.
Your Yoyo account will not be re-opened until they hear from you.
Once you have made contact with the person who suspended your Yoyo account:
- If you haven't broken any rules, your Yoyo account may be re-opened straight away.
It is normal procedure to suspend a Yoyo account if its owner
cannot be contacted straight away.
That does not necessarily mean that you have done anything wrong.
- If there is a risk that someone else might have access to your Yoyo account, it will be suspended until you can safely change your password. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use your Yoyo account for that time, but then, neither will anyone else!
- If you have broken one of the rules outlined in the regulations that apply to Yoyo:
- You may receive a warning, which will be recorded in the security files.
- Your Yoyo account may be suspended for a longer period, depending on how many warnings you have received.
If misuse of a Yoyo account contravenes regulations that are under the jurisdiction of other authorities, then those authorities may take action on their own behalf. Such authorities include:
- The Computer Centre
- Monash University
- State or Federal Police
Obviously, such actions could have severe consequences for your University career, or worse. So, it's in your own interest to make yourself aware of the rules.
The warnings system determines the period for which an account will be suspended, when a breach of Yoyo regulations has occurred.
| 1st Warning | Usually reopened after talking to the account holder
|
| 2nd Warning | Up to 2 weeks suspension
|
| 3rd Warning | Up to 6 months suspension
|
These periods are a guide used by the security team; the actual period may be varied at their discretion.
Further, a Yoyo user who habitually disregards the regulations may find their Yoyo account closed permanently.
