The GAUNIX Security group FAQ

Why do Yoyo accounts get suspended?

Unfortunately many people's first contact with the security group comes after their Yoyo account is suspended. This is one of our more unpleasant tasks, but sometimes it is necessary.

When a member of the security group believes that a Yoyo account is being used in a way that contravenes any of the regulations, they are required to:

  1. Take action to prevent such misuse from continuing.
It may be necessary to suspend the Yoyo account to prevent further misuse.
  2. Notify the owner of the Yoyo account.
  3. Discuss the matter with the owner of the Yoyo account.
  4. Determine any penalty or other action to be taken.
During 1996, the Top 5 reasons why Yoyo accounts were suspended were:

Mudding outside Monash

Access to MUDs outside the *.monash.edu.au domains is prohibited from Yoyo.

Yoyo account user was not the owner

Yoyo accounts are issued for the personal use of the account holder only. Do not give your password to anyone, for any reason. If you suspect that someone else is using your account, you should change your password immediately, and notify the security group.

Software Piracy

Authors of commercial software reasonably expect people to purchase their own copy if they wish to use it. They also tend to sue people who try to avoid doing so.
We don't want to have to explain it in court if someone finds pirated software on our machine. We prefer to make sure there isn't any pirated software on our machine.

Compiling hacked programs

Client programs provided on Yoyo may have certain restrictions coded into them, for security reasons. Yoyo users may not compile their own versions of programs provided on Yoyo.
If a Yoyo user wishes to use a program that is not already installed on Yoyo, they should contact the local group, who administer such things, and can help to optimise the program's performance.

Spamming

(inappropriate use of communications programs)
The General Access UNIX User Agreement contains guidelines as to what is appropriate and what is not. Members of the internet community - including Yoyo users - have a right to use the internet without being subjected to unwanted talk requests, goofs, emails, chain letters, and so forth. Yoyo users are required to read the Agreement, and abide by it.
